More Pics - Memorial Day weekend

Here's more pictures...

Memorial Day Campout

Our trek to Logan Canyon for the Memorial Day weekend was an act of faith this year. All the weather reports forecasted rain, rain, lightning, thunder, and, oh yeah, more rain. Are we insane or what???

Needless to say...we are Zabriskies...so we packed our camper and took to the road. Ken got us there in what seems "record time" even though there was construction along the way and I had to close my eyes a few times so I wouldn't have a heart attack.

All in all, we had a very enjoyable time. It was a little chilly and it only rained on Friday night so we got to do some fun things. We fished, took hikes, explored, played baseball, and had Smores by the fire. Here's lots of pictures for you all to enjoy...

Wet Wood and Wisdom

Today I picked up some wood from a fellow Freecycler to take on our campouts this summer. A friendly older fellow with a great heart and wisdom in his eyes. As I arrived at his door he lets me in and asks me if I've seen the latest email going around about tech support in India and the wires. He treats me like a good friend as we check out the hideous pictures of spider wires on his email. As I wait for him to gather his hat and gloves, I admire the large pictures on his wall...one of his family and another which is religious. I'm a little shocked and surprised to feel so welcome and at peace in this stranger's home.

Well, as we proceeded to the back of the property and load up the wood, we get caught up in talking about camping, beef cows and his kids. What perfect timing to have this conversation since the livestock auction we've gone to for our meat has been sold and closed down. We also discussed the jobs he has retired from and his ventures at the moment which include providing tables and chairs for weddings and other functions of the sort.

The more I spoke with him, the more I thought of my dad. What interesting stories he must have and the wisdom his mind holds. Sadly, for my dad, that wisdom is being locked behind doors that he just can't open anymore and each time I'm able to visit, I am saddened by the toll life is taking on him. There's a lot of things I could have learned from him if I had just taken the time...

Well, as I prepared to leave with my truck full of wet wood and a new friend, this man gives me a sample of hamburger from his cows and a flyer with his name and number. Oh, that more people could be so open and friendly! I love living in this fairly rural area where people are still kind to strangers and open with their hearts. This man truly showed me what it means to be Christlike.

Musings

Why is it that when you need to contact a company, it's just a great hassle. But when you don't want to hear from them, they won't leave you alone?

Why is it that the kids ignore me until I get on the phone?

Why is it that when I aggressively start using coupons, all the prices go up on groceries?

Why is it that as the kids get older I have less and less patience?

Why is it that when I'm looking for something specific while shopping the garage sales, it just can't be found or it's already sold?

Why is it that I've started complaining to a blog page.....

Golden Spike Anniversary

Last Saturday, May 10, we went up to Promontory, Utah and attended the anniversary celebration of the Golden Spike. The kids had a great time watching the steam engines and listening to the history of the railroad. They learned what the train whistles stand for and, of course, I had to buy a whistle for myself.

Ken's friend from work, Erik, came with us to see the Utah sites. He's from Georgia (if I remember correctly) and is trying to see what he can while he's here.

It was a really fun and relaxing day for us all.

Lessons I've learned...

Today has been a rough day. Feeling a little sick, over-stressed and over-scheduled. In my rush to the bathroom I picked up a book on our side table titled, Don't Sweat the Small Stuff...and it's all small stuff, by Richard Carlson, Ph.D. Here's the page it opened up to

Chapter 32.
Life Is a Test. It Is Only a Test.

When you look at life and its many challenges as a test, or series of tests, you begin to see each issue you face as an opportunity to grow, a chance to roll with the punches. Whether you're being bombarded with problems, responsibilities, even insurmountable hurdles, when looked at as a test, you always have a chance to succeed, in the sense of rising above that which is challenging you...

Of course it continues on with the kind of insight that I needed at the moment. This book has been a very interesting and valuable find. I think I got it from Freecycle. I highly recommend reading it. Thanks to whomever chose to part with this wisdom.
